The Prairie Girls’ Soccer team played against Linn-Mar on Tuesday night at John Wall Stadium for their fifth game of the season.

Going into the game both teams were undefeated. Prairie suffered the loss after double overtime and penalty kicks.

In the first half, the Hawks struck first with a goal by Lily Powell. Linn-Mar tied it with 8 minutes left; it was 1-1 going into the second half. Both teams went scoreless in the second half leading to the first overtime.

After two scoreless overtimes, it came down to penalty kicks. Prairie missed one in the penalty shootout resulting in a 5-4 loss.

“I think we all learned to have a lot more confidence going into a big game like that. Going into double overtime, and then penalty kicks with a very talented fifth-ranked team in the state gave us a lot of hope for our ultimate goal of getting to State. Obviously, we wanted a better outcome but we are flushing it and worrying about our next game,” said Sophie Meier, a senior captain.

The Girls’ Soccer team is now preparing for upcoming games at Center Point-Urbana on Thursday and Iowa City West on Tuesday.

“Looking forward to future games, our main focus is winning but by playing well and improving little things like our touches, playing the easier ball, slowing down their attack, little things like that can make a big difference in the game,” said Meier.
